Organizations working to protect California Salmon Northern California boasts two of the historically top salmon producing rivers in America, the Sacramento and the Klamath. However, in the past hundred and fifty years, dams, diversions, pollution, and intensive logging within watersheds have led to a loss of 90% of our wild salmon populations.
Today, Californians from all walks of life are working to not only save what’s left, but restore what’s been lost. The restoration effort in many cases is being led by Tribes such as the Karuk, Yurok, and Hoopa. Increasingly, Tribes are enjoying support for their restoration efforts from a host of non-governmental organizations, citizen groups, and labor councils.
This is a partial list of organizations working to restore salmon around Northern California. These groups depend on the financial support and volunteer time of folks just like you, so join one and volunteer today!
